This Is Why Mums Should Do A Solo Trip With Their Children

This mum is doing a solo trip with each of her children at some point in their childhood. She says it’s amazing to have that special time together.

Two years ago when traveling in Nicaragua, Dawn and her family met a mum and her teenage son on a special solo trip.  The mum took each of her three kids on a trip and since this son was really passionate about birds, Nicaragua was his pick.  She absolutely loved the idea of having a special trip with each child and vowed to do the same with her kids.

First up was her daughter, Ella. Next came son, Gavin with a fun-filled getaway to the city-on-and-island with the wow factor, Singapore.

Q&A

Dawn on her special trip (and holiday photoshoot) with middle-child Gav – as a mum of three, as well as the mum of family travel blog 5 Lost Together.

Why were you in Singapore?

We’ve done a lot of traveling this year and a trip to Singapore was not originally in the cards.  I found a great deal with Fly Scoot from Melbourne to Singapore and spontaneously booked the trip.  We have three children and I really like the idea of doing a solo trip with each of them at some point in their childhood.

I had taken my eldest away a couple of years ago and so the Singapore trip was just me and my middle child, Gavin.

What did you think of the “city-on-an-island” with a wow factor?

The last time I was in Singapore was over 10 years ago and there has been a lot of development and change since then.  I was eager to check out the iconic Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay Sands complex that weren’t there last time I visited.

Singapore is such a great, gentle introduction to Asia; it feels exotic and cultural, but also offers services and amenities of a developed country.  You have the cultural influences from China, Malaysia and India, creating an opportunity to experience all three cultures.

We loved eating all the various hawker food that the city has to offer.   The island of Sentosa has so many great attractions for the whole family from KidZania to Universal Studios to beaches and waterparks.

How would you describe your son? Your relationship with him?

Gav is a typical middle child.  He’s helpful, low-key and easy going.  He doesn’t demand attention and so I was really looking forward to having a holiday where I could devote 100% of my attention to him.

Our whole family is really close and we are used to traveling all together.  It was amazing to have that special time together, but we did miss the rest of the family as well.

What did you think of the shoot?

The shoot was a really fun way to create photos for us to remember this special trip.

Kaye, our photographer was great at telling us more about the city, from a local’s perspective.  We did a really nice mix of photos with iconic Singapore locations, but also some off-the-beaten path areas.

She put us at ease quickly and was great at working with an 8-year old!

How do you feel about having photos like this of you and your middle child?

It is so special to have these photos of our solo trip together and I know years from now we will look back on them to remember the trip.

So often we struggle to get photos with the whole family and I absolutely love the idea of having photos taken on holiday.

I just might have to plan our next trip around another photoshoot with the whole family this time!

Dawn and Gav did a SHORT Wander with Kaye in Singapore. Read more about their experience in Special Photographs On Our Special Trip.
